Most Botox® injections last from four to six months. This will depend on the size of the area being treated, if Botox® has ever been used before, and the age of the patient. The younger a patient is the longer the treatment will last, sometimes up to 8 or 9 months. The severity of damage to the skin may also be a factor. If a person has received Botox® injections before, additional treatments will begin to last longer. If a patient wants to maintain the results for as long as possible, getting repeat injections helps to keep the skin looking its best. Even if a treatment is missed or the patient goes longer than normal without getting a booster, the skin may remain more flexible for awhile after the original treatment.
Botox® injections may cause minimal side effects. At the injection site, the most common reactions include warmth, redness, skin irritation, and tenderness to the touch. Around the area, the appearance of the skin may be slightly red or bruised. In some cases, the entire treatment area may be sore or tender to the touch. Most of the side effects last only a few hours, especially if this is a second or third treatment. If this is the first time a person is receiving the injections, the side effects may last slightly longer. Most reactions should disappear rather quickly. If they are still present after the first two or three days, the patient should immediately notify their physician.
Individuals who are beginning to notice the signs of aging that often appear on the face can often benefit from Botox® injections. Fine lines and wrinkles can begin to appear around the eyes, nose, mouth, and along the forehead as a person's skin begins to change. Overexposure to the sun and environmental contaminants can also speed up the aging process, causing the skin to look older and more worn. Individuals who begin to notice these changes in their early 40's and 50's are ideal candidates for this type of cosmetic procedure. A doctor will evaluate the patient's overall health and the condition of their skin to help them decide whether or not the procedure is right for them.
